                        2.  The Rolling Shell - the foundation of the build

We are really excited about this project based on the shell alone.  Being in New England, almost every project car you find as considerable rot.  We had this shell shipped from California and I am just amazed at how clean it is.  There is not 1 area of rot anywhere.  There is quite a story behind it (isn't there always?), but long story short, it has been garaged in primer since 1985.  It had been in CA its entire life until I had it shipped here.  Take a close look at the pictures below, especially in the typical rot areas, and you will see original seam sealer, window trim tabs, welds, etc.  We will even be able to use the original brake/fuel lines if we choose to.   They are like brand new!

8/12/11: Currently, we have the shell stripped.  The next step is sending the shell to the media blaster.  We are also locating a 454/396/427 long block.
8/16/11 Going to the media blaster tomorrow!

                        8/17/11 - To the blaster!

                        8/25/11 - At the blaster!

They are just getting started, but so far so good!  They are on their 1st step of blasting the whole shell with plastic.  After they finish this stage, they will use more aggressive media on the heavier surface rust.  So far they have not found any rot.  The roof seam still has the original lead and hasn't been messed with.  In the 1st pic on the 3rd row, you can see the original ink stamping in the metal.  I knew that the driver's side quarter panel had been pulled as their were some signs of this from the trunk.  Turns out someone did 3 pulls on the quarter seem and 3 more on the lip.  But it's not bad and ALL metal, so no need to patch or replace anything.  Hopefully, there won't be a patch needed anywhere on the whole shell!

9/2/11 - Back from the media blaster

As I hoped...NO ROT!!! It really is amazing.  The car will retain all of its' original panels.  Being in New England I have never seen a muscle car this clean.  The media blaster said that they have only done 1 other Camaro that was this clean...and they have done quite a few!

                        9-6-11 Getting some epoxy primer

2 colors, but same product (some was on the shelf).  Both are PPG Epoxy Primer.  A lot of time was spent cleaning, DAing, and then spraying into all of the nooks and crannies.

                        9-8-11

The shell is completely epoxy primed.
